What Is a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for Research Peptides?

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document from a testing lab that reports the identity and purity of a specific batch of material. For research peptides, a COA typically shows HPLC purity (often ≥99%), the identification method, the lot number, and the test date. It's the difference between a supplier claiming quality and documenting it — batch by batch.

What a COA actually contains

A useful COA ties results to a specific lot or batch, so the document corresponds to the exact material you received. At minimum, look for:

• Compound identity — confirmation of what the material is
• Purity result — commonly expressed as an HPLC percentage
• Method — the analytical technique used (e.g., HPLC; sometimes paired with MS)
• Lot / batch number — so the COA maps to your inventory
• Test date and the testing party

If a "COA" has no lot number or method, it isn't doing its job.

What HPLC purity tells you

HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) separates the components of a sample so the proportion of the target compound can be measured. A result of ≥99% HPLC means the target made up at least 99% of what the method detected. It's the standard purity benchmark in the research-peptide space — and the number a credible supplier should be willing to back with a document.

HPLC is about identity and purity, not about end use. It tells you what's in the vial and how pure it is, which is exactly what a research buyer needs to know before committing to volume.
